Compaction Equipment

Compaction Equipment Rental

What is Compaction Equipment?

Most construction sites and road construction need the stable ground to do their work on. The soil needs to be compressed so there are not any pockets of air underground that can disrupt the process. Compaction equipment rearranges particles in the soil or any soft ground to decrease voids and increase density.

They provide the surface with sufficient load-bearing strength, with their drum or plate, to crush and flatten the soil. The most common type of project that uses compaction equipment involves construction projects, particularly roadwork. Without compaction equipment, roads would have irregular and extensive surface wear, making it dangerous to travel. Compaction equipment is also working well to create and compact foundation ground.

Typically, we can categorize Compaction Equipment into light compaction equipment and heavy compaction equipment

Light Compaction Equipment

There are 3 common types of light compaction equipment in the market.

1. Rammer

Rammers is the smallest manual compactor and work great when compacting cohesive soils because of the small size of the plate. It can fit into narrow spaces such as trenches and tight spots where compactors are not as easy to manoeuvre. The smaller plate size allows for more focused and direct compaction, which comes in handy on soils that require more force to properly compact. Instead of using vibratory force, its use impact force for compaction.

2. Plate Compactor

Plate Compactor are ideal when working with granular soils because they use vibrations to help settle the soil as it compacts and with its large vibrating baseplate and is suited for creating a level grade. A vibratory plate compactor is used for the compaction of different types of soils in narrow & restricted areas where it is not possible to use large equipment. These walk-behind machines are used for preparing car parks, footpaths, foundations, sub-bases, trenches and paving, especially in confined areas where turning a vehicle is difficult.

3. Walk Behind Roller

As known by name, walk behind roller mean an operator is required to walk behind and control the roller to work. This compactor is bigger than the other light compactor and much smaller than those heavy compactor rollers. Hence, it provides excellent performance on medium compacting jobs on granular materials, soils and asphalt. The equipment also offers great visibility to the operator at any angle which allows precise work near walls and sidewalks because of its compact design.

Heavy Compaction Equipment

There are 4 common types of heavy compaction equipment in the market.

1. Smooth Wheeled Roller

This roller is also known as a static smooth wheeled roller. This roller is commonly used for finishing the upper surface of the soil, but not used for the compaction of uniform sand. This type of roller is equipped with a large steel drum at the front and one or two wheels or drums at the rear. They named tandem roller (one wheel at the rear) and three-wheeled roller (two wheels at the rear).

2. Vibratory Roller

The major difference with smooth wheel roller is vibratory roller fitted with vibrating component, vibrate by the rotation of an eccentric shaft inside.  This roller is commonly used for compacting granular base courses and sometimes for asphalt and are useful for compacting to greater depths.

3. Sheepsfoot Roller

This roller also known as pad foot roller and generally used for compacting fine-grained soil such as heavy clays and silty clay in road construction work. This type of roller consists of a steel drum on which round or rectangular protrusions are known as lugs or feet is fixed.

4. Pneumatic Tyre Roller

This roller is also known as rubber tyres roller and is generally used for compaction of uniform coarse soil and rocks as well as in pavement sub-grade works both earthwork and bituminous work. The pneumatic roller consists of wheels on both axles. These wheels are staggered for the compaction of soil layers with uniform pressure throughout the width of the roller. The factors which affect the degree of compaction are tyre inflation pressure and the area of the contact.
