What is a Silty Water Treatment System?

Silty Water Treatment System (ECM) aims to treat stormwater surface runoff that may potentially carry pollutants and contaminants into storm drains. Commonly used in project sites, it can effectively treat and remove suspended solids, preventing muddy water discharge from construction activities, and affecting the cleanliness of the water in our waterways.

In Singapore, Singapore Public Utilities Board (PUB) has made it mandatory for contractors to install silty water treatment systems at construction sites as part of Earth Control Measures (ECM) requirements.

There are 2 main types of Silty Water Treatment Systems:

1. Membrane Filtration

Membrane filtration is commonly used with particle filtration, a system that separates solids from liquids using either physical or mechanical means. When the highest water quality is required, it is common to see membrane filtration systems being used. Three common types of membrane filtration are reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration.

2. Chemical treatment

Chemical treatments utilize the additive of chemicals to make industrial water suitable for use or discharge. Processes like chemical precipitation, chemical disinfection, Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP), ion exchange, and chemical neutralization are included. To process the water, the treatment and steps required can change greatly depending on what the end goal for the water is. The cleaner the water is required to be, the greater the number of processes that must be used.
