5 COMMON TYPES OF EXCAVATORS

Excavators took 56% of the total of all construction equipment sold in the world in 2018. It is the most popular and powerful machine in the world. Same as in Singapore, you can easily see excavators all over the place on the roadside. By the name itself, you probably can think of the main function of an excavator as to excavate or digging. However, the excavator can be so powerful and popular not only limited to excavation but can use to lift, push, compress, demolition, etc.

Excavators can be used for any type of work such as normal grading work and landscaping, cutting of brushes with attachments, demolition of the building structure, mining excavation, dredging of rivers, Installation of piles in foundations, digging of foundations, holes, and trenches, handling and lifting of heavy materials and etc, you name it.

There are five separate excavator types. For most excavator operators, that function can change rather quickly, some cross categories and serve dual purposes, but these different types had specific purposes. Below are the general excavator types in the market.

The crawler excavator is the most common and famous excavator you’ll see in Singapore. It's everywhere. It also referred to as the standard excavator. These are machines on tracks, run on two rotating tracks instead of wheels. Crawler excavators can be further categorized into mini excavators, standard excavators, and large excavators depending on the operating weight. In Singapore, a crawler excavator is commonly used for trench digging, soil excavation, landscape grading, handling of materials, etc. You can easily rent this type of excavator in Singapore.

2. Wheeled Excavator

The wheeled excavator has almost the same function as the crawler excavator. The only difference is it has wheels instead of tracks, which gives the excavator much more excellent mobility. It's running on the wheel and can move easily and faster, can even drive on road. Not like crawler excavator can work on harsh terrain (hills and slopes), Its mainly used on asphalt or concrete on flat or hard surfaces. This type of excavator is very rare in Singapore. Is it backhoe is a wheeled excavator? Most of the time, a backhoe is not considered an excavator.

3. Long-reach Excavator

As its name suggests, it is a wheeled excavator attached with a longer reach arm instead of a standard arm. It has long extendable arm and boom sections, ideal for working across difficult watercourses and tricky demolition sites. Its function the same as a wheeled excavator with a longer maximum reach and deeper digging depth. In Singapore, the long-reach excavator also very useful in demolition projects where a longer safe distance requires. The long-reach excavator’s arm has a range of 40 to 100 feet, and the extendable arm can reach over 100 feet away horizontally.

4. Dragline Excavator

It is the largest piece of excavator that use in open area earthmoving surface mining and large-scale civil project. The weight ranges from 8000 tons up to 13000 tons.  It’s shared a similar concept with a crawler crane that utilizes a hoist rope system to lift and lower the bucket and a dragline to drag the bucket toward the driver. With the dragline system, the digging depth can be up to 213 feet or more. Make it stand with the rest type of excavator with rigid arm. Due to its size and weight, the dragline excavator cannot be transported with the normal trailer but only assembled on site.

5. Suction Excavator

Also called a vacuum excavator, include a high-pressure vacuum suction pipe. It moves material by creating an extremely high airflow that sucks loose material through a hose into the hopper. Suction excavators mainly used on fragile digging jobs and underground projects such as excavated soil around cables and pipes. Other, you may need to break loose the hard ground either with a hammer or high-pressure water jet. Besides, suction excavators are common in high-density urban work where they perform close-quarter utility work with little damage risk to adjacent property, and it is very clean. However, its is still very rare in Singapore where most of the contractor prefers to use mini excavator, which is much cheaper.

We will cover more on different types of crawler excavators in the future and what kind of available attachment instead of just bucket.
