The Status of Singapore's Maritime and Tuas Mega Port in the World.

Why Singapore is so important in the world maritime trade flow?

Despite Singapore is just a small red dot in the world with no natural resources at all, God bless Singapore with its given strategic geographical location and protection from almost all kinds of natural disasters.

Singapore is strategically located in the middle of the trade route from east to west or from west to east. That's advantage makes Singapore become the world's most important trans-shipment and bunkering hub in the world.

By number, Singapore is the world's largest bunkering port in the world. There are 130,000 vessels passed through the Strait of Malacca or the South China Sea to Singapore annually for bunkering, trans-shipment and etc. 80% of the vessel is transhipped to another hub. Singapore dominates the top spot of bunkering port in the world around 50 million mt of the bunker. Follow by Fujairah, Rotterdam, Hong Kong and etc.

Singapore is also the second-largest port in the world in 2019 with a total container volume throughput of 37.2 million TEU (1 TEU equal to 20Ft container), just behind Shanghai Port 43.3m TEU. Based on these two facts, its already tell you how important Singapore's maritime status in the world. It's amazing how capable of Singapore government to transform the strategic location into the most important port in the world.

Mega Tuas Port is a trans-shipment port largest than anyone else in the world with a container handling volume of up to 65 million TEUs. The port will occupy 1339 ha of land, about twice the size of Ang Mo Kio Towns! The perimeter line of the berths is as long as 26km.

The current existing Singapore PSA port is comprising of 4 terminals which are Pasir Panjang Terminal, Brani Terminal, Keppel Terminal, and Tanjong Pagar Terminal. Its estimate at 45 million TEU handling capacity in total.

As you can see, the total container handling throughout has been increasing annually up to 37 million TEU a year and expected to increase amid global trade growth. Singapore Port will very soon reach its threshold and has to plan for capacity expansion. That is why there is Mega Tuas Port is in construction. The current city terminal will be phase by phase relocating to the new Mega Tuas port from now until 2040.

By 2027, the city terminal Tanjong Pagar, Keppel, and Brain should be fully relocating to Tuas Mega port as lease-end. The Pasir Panjang Port is planned to fully relocate by 2040. This will free up total land in the city of a total of 725 ha more future development. One of them is the Greater Southern Waterfront project.

By relocating and consolidate the 4 separate existing port into Tuas mega Tuas port,

1. It can provide assurance for shipping lines that their growth in cargo can be fully accommodated.

2. Eliminate the inter-terminal haulage cost and efficiency,

3. Use of latest technology to improve the productivity and free of land in the city for re-development.

4. Free up existing city land for future development

The new Tuas Terminal will have features to enable faster vessel turnaround in the port and optimize the deployment of resources for port and marine services. Both wharf-side and yard operations will be automated. By the time of completion, the new port will become the most advanced port in the world.

Below are the key features of the new future port.

Drone technology – Drone will be used to shore ship deliveries. Send for vessel damages inspection and etc.

Automated Technology – Quay crane, yard crane, and the guided vehicle will be fully automated.

Automated loading/unloading activities - Computer, sensors, and cameras for more precise and safe handling of cargo.

Green Technology – Crane and the guided vehicles will be fully electric driven. Solar energy will be harvested and waste heat energy recovered from the building system

Floating platform – Instead of vessel anchorage to wait for berthing, the floating platform will allow vessel for mooring to process for immigration, inspection, bunkering, supplier channels to speed up the entire waiting time.

Big Data - Integration of big data and predictive analytic for more intelligent vessel traffic management system and port system.
