Diesel or Electric power? These are two vastly different power sources, and there’s a time and condition for each.
Diesel-generated construction equipment is still holding a major market share compare to electrical driven. Why? Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine fuel source, carrying 38-kilowatt hours of energy in every gallon — 27 times that of lithium ion batteries.
Traditionally, construction equipment is driven by diesel engines and has been proven for decades. Meanwhile, battery technology is getting more advance within this decade. One of the significant milestones is Tesla, a company that selling electric cars is already the most valuable car maker company in the world!
Nothing came as a surprise that electrical-driven construction equipment is getting more and more attention now a day when coming to the topic of environment friendly.
There are already many options in selecting electrical driven equipment such as boom lift, scissor lift, and forklift. So, how are you going to decide if to choose diesel-driven or electrical-driven construction equipment?
No worries! We have few tips of consideration for you here when you have this dilemma.
No doubt, most likely you need to rent electrically driven equipment when you work indoors. Electrical-driven equipment is zero-emission and extremely quiet in operation. It is safe to work to avoid air and noise pollution indoor. Meanwhile, you may rent diesel-driven due to its better performance outdoor at the same range compared to electric-driven type.
Diesel-driven equipment will have a much higher power output if compare to electrical driven. At this moment, most of the available electric-driven equipment is at the lower capacity range. For higher capacity, you will have a very limited option and have to go for diesel driven. Of course, indoor usage normally is a much lower range and capacity than outdoor use.
In common, electric-driven equipment has a much compact body size compare to diesel-driven equipment. For the same range of equipment, if you are looking to maneuver in a tight space, electrical-driven equipment may give you a better advantage due to its size over diesel-driven.
The continuous working hours of electrically driven equipment are limited from 4 – 8 hours depending on working intensity. You need to charge the battery upon battery flat, and it takes time! Typically, battery equipment such as a battery forklift requires 8 hours to fully charge the battery and require another 8 hours to cool down before use.
However, top-up fuel for diesel-driven equipment is much faster than battery charging. That means diesel-generated equipment will allow you to operate for a long shift, long hours without any hiccup to your work.
Diesel-driven equipment is more durable than electrical driven in extreme conditions. That is why diesel-driven equipment is often the option to go for outdoor usage. Diesel-driven equipment is also proved to perform much better than electrically driven equipment outdoor.
Diesel-driven equipment has much more moving parts than electrical driven. Therefore, it has a higher possibility of breakdown and requires more frequent maintenance. If you are renting equipment, this shouldn’t be an issue as the maintenance will be under supplier scope. However, if you look to purchase either diesel or electrical equipment, thinking twice as much maintenance cost can be draining out money from your pocket unexpectedly.
Hope the article can help you to make the right choice to rent construction equipment between diesel or electric driven in the future.
