Raising the Standard for Construction Training in Singapore
In an evolving construction industry where safety, skills, and compliance are more important than ever, training institutions play a vital role. We sat down with Hansen Ng, Director of BS Technology, to talk about the story behind Bok Seng Academy, the courses they offer, and what the future looks like for construction training in Singapore.
1. What inspired the creation of Bok Seng Academy, and what role does BS Technology play?
Hansen:
BS Technology started out as an equipment trading company within the Bok Seng Group. While working closely with clients in construction and logistics, we noticed a common problem — operators had the right equipment but often didn’t have the proper training to use it safely and efficiently. That was leading to more accidents and slower work on site.
To solve this, we began creating training programs to help operators and workers improve their skills. Over time, this grew into Bok Seng Academy, our training brand that focuses on practical workplace safety and operational skills for construction and logistics.
BS Technology takes care of things like course content, trainer arrangements, and making sure we meet SSG and MOM requirements. I focus on making sure the training we deliver through Bok Seng Academy is practical, relevant, and actually helps people do their jobs better on site.
2. What is your long-term vision for Bok Seng Academy?
Hansen: Our goal is pretty simple — we want to help build a safer and more skilled workforce in construction and logistics. We aim to keep growing and adapting, making sure our training matches what the industry really needs now and in the future. Whether it’s new technology or updated safety rules, we want to help workers stay ahead.
3. How important is an academy like yours in Singapore’s construction industry today?
Hansen: It’s really important. Safety and skills can’t be ignored, especially in construction where mistakes can be costly or dangerous. With stricter rules and higher standards in Singapore, good training isn’t just a “nice-to-have” — it’s a must. Training helps workers do their jobs right, keeps everyone safer, and helps projects run smoother.
4. What types of courses does Bok Seng Academy offer?
Hansen: We offer a wide range of practical courses that are designed for construction and logistics workers. These focus on key areas like:
Operating equipment, including different types of access platforms and material handling machines
Lifting operations, from rigger and signalman tasks to supervising safe lifts
Working at height, whether it’s doing the job safely or managing and supervising those tasks
Scaffolding, covering both building and supervising metal scaffolds
All our courses help workers and supervisors gain the skills they need to work safely and confidently on site.
5. With many training academies in Singapore, how should companies choose the right one?
Hansen: There are a lot of training providers out there, but not all are the same. Here’s what I usually tell people to look out for:
First, is the training useful for the job? Your workers should learn things they can use right away at the worksite.
Second, does the provider really understand the work? Trainers who have been on site and know the challenges workers face can teach in a way that connects with the actual job.
And lastly, how easy is it to work with the provider? A good training partner should be quick to respond, flexible, and understand your site’s needs. They should be able to adjust schedules, help with paperwork, and solve problems fast. When things run smoothly, it makes life easier for your team and keeps projects on track.
6. Where do you see the construction training industry heading in the next 5–10 years?
Hansen: I think training will keep moving toward real capability building — not just about passing a course, but helping people actually apply what they learn. There’ll be more blended learning, combining hands-on practice with digital elements. And topics like sustainability and smarter work processes will become more important as the industry changes.
7. What’s next for Bok Seng Academy?
Hansen: We’re looking at courses that support sustainability and simple technology that helps workers and supervisors stay up to date. As the industry evolves, we want our training to stay practical and forward-looking — so companies get real value and workers stay job-ready.
8. How would you describe the current training academy landscape in Singapore? Is it competitive?
Hansen: Yes, it’s definitely competitive. That just means every training provider has to work harder to stay relevant and deliver real value. What really sets a good training provider apart is how well they understand the industry and how practical their courses are. For us, it’s about helping companies build safer, more capable teams that can meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s demands.
Beyond Certification: A Commitment to Safety and Quality
As our conversation with the leadership of BST Technology draws to a close, one message stands out clearly: training isn’t just about obtaining a certificate — it’s about building real competency. In an industry where lives and livelihoods depend on safe practices, BST Technology takes its role seriously. By prioritizing the quality of its courses over mere compliance, the company upholds a vital responsibility — shaping a workforce that not only meets standards, but actively contributes to a safer, healthier construction environment. In a time where shortcuts are easy, BST remains committed to doing things right.
