How To Choose The Right Scissor Lift For Your Project

Guide To Choose The Right Scissor Lift?

When you are talking about working at height, there is nothing more common than a scissor lift. Scissor Lift can be the most common equipment in Singapore for every contractor to perform their construction work, building maintenance, renovation, signage installation and etc. There is nothing like a scissor lift to provide you quick and safe access to hard-to-reach places at different heights without a scaffold.

Even though a scissor lift seems like a simple piece of equipment, but to rent the exact scissor lift for your project may be more complicated than you think. We have seen many customers that rent the wrong size or height of scissors for their project, in the end, they have to spend extra cost to rent again for the right scissor lift.

So, we would like to share some important guidelines to rent the right equipment for the very first time to satisfy your project need, so you wouldn’t need to spend extra cost on the mistake.

What is Scissor Lift?

Below is the step by step guide to renting the right scissor lift:

1. Determine Working Height

First, you need to know the difference between platform height and working height, these two heights are totally different term and confusion of these may lead you to rent the wrong scissor lift.

Working height is the height that you need to reach to perform the work. It may be the highest point where your worker needs to touch on.

Platform height is the maximum height of the scissor lift platform that can be raised up for your worker to stand on. Commonly, the scissor lift platform height is 6m, 8m, and 10m. Of course, there is a higher platform height such as 12m or 14m, but not so commonly available.

Basically, the standard worker reach height can be considered as 2m. Let’s say if you need to reach the maximum height of 8m to do any installation and construction work, then your working height is 8m. To choose the right scissor lift platform, you should subtract the worker height which is 2m to get the right scissor lift platform height, which is 6m.

Some brand catalogs will show both maximum working height and maximum platform for your easy reference. You can easily check.

2. Platform Weight Capacity

After you have determined the height that you need to reach, you need to consider the load that you need to carry on the platform. Scissor Lift can carry 2 persons on the platform, or some with higher capacity are able to carry 3 persons. The platform capacity can be from 227kg (most common) and above depend on the model.

Do reminded that if you are working outdoor where the ground is not flat or solid, you should be more cautious about how many persons to be work on the platform. As per the specification suggest, you should only allow one person instead of two at the outdoor.

3. Equipment Weight

I couldn’t stress how important is to check the ground bearing capacity or any point of scissor lift access. The bearing capacity of the ground must be greater than the equipment weight in order not to cause any damage to the floor, or any hiccup during mobilizing a scissor lift into your working space.

The equipment weight of the scissor lift can be weight from 1.3 tons and above. We have seen some cases that customers never determine the right equipment weight and having an issue to mobilize the scissor lift through the cargo lift of the building, or cause damage to the floor tile. These are definitely the thing that you do not wish to see in your project.

You can easily check the weight of the scissor lift in the specification as above.

4. Size of Equipment

Scissor lift platforms come in different standard sizes depending on brand and model. You should always check the access requirement into the working area to ensure that the scissor lift is more than sufficient to mobilize into such as cargo lift size, door, and corrido size. Aside, you should also check if the space is big enough when you raise your platform to access the overhead space.

Dimension of the scissor lift can be easily checked in the specification as well as below:

5. Power Source

There are two common types of power sources which are diesel-driven or battery operated. A battery-operated scissor lift is much more common and widely available for rent in the Singapore market than diesel operators. Most of the time, the battery-operated scissor lift is the better option for users due to it perfectly fitting into indoor users and easy maintenance, as no need for diesel refilling. Of course, due to it widely available, the cost of rental for battery operated scissor lift is also lower.

However, for outdoor use with a working height of more than 12m, diesel will be a preferred choice with better performance, longer continuous working duration (no need charge battery), and much more durable than battery operated.

In Summary

Choosing the right scissor lift is not just about the height but to consider another factor as well. By pulling together all factors mentioned above, you should have a good background about what you need for your project, and it's time to make your own call what brand and model of a scissor lift is fit for your project.
