What is a Rotary Drilling Rig?
Rotary Drilling Rigs are track or lorry mounted with a rotary cutting head that drives into the ground. It is used to form a deep observation borehole or for obtaining rock samples. The machine needs lubrication such as air, water, or drilling mud to maintain the coolness of the cutting head.
Rotary drilling rigs utilise high levels of rotation and torque, with their drill bit rapidly rotating (between 5 and 30 rpm) and drilling through the rock formation. Their torque-speed can hit up to over 120 rpm depending on the model. The high speed and frequency of rotations make rotary drilling an effective way of cutting through both soft and hard rock formations.

There are 2 types of rotary drilling methods, core and open-hole drilling.
Rotary Core Drilling is drilling done at a controlled rotating speed while providing axial load and torque to suit the toughness of the rock and sedimentary structure. This method is particularly suitable for recovering weak deposits on the surface in their original condition as the vibration from the drilling action is minimised.
Rotary Open Hole Drilling is a fast and economical way to observe soil and rock formation up to a depth of 60m and above. However, material recovered from this method is not suitable for effective sampling for observation due to the mixture of lubricant. This method is more suitable for rapid drilling for core recovery or for the installation of groundwater monitoring wells.
They are widely applied to the construction of high buildings, bridge, water conservancy and so on and especially proper for the complex geological layers containing much water. Rotary Drilling Rig is an ideal equipment for all kinds of foundation construction.
