Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) is a design approach that focuses on ease of manufacture and efficiency of assembly. By simplifying the design of a product, it is possible to manufacture and assemble it more efficiently, in the minimum time, and at a lower cost.
All the while, DfMA has been applied to sectors such as the design of automotive and consumer products, both of which need to efficiently produce high-quality products in large numbers. Under Construction Industry Transformation Map (ITM), DFMA is one of them is that Singapore Government is pushing for adoption.
PPVC is one of the construction methods under the DfMA concept. With PPVC, the construction installation will be like Lego manner, where the breakdown unit of the building will be fully fabricated out of the job site. The breakdown unit will complete with internal finishes, fixtures, and fittings before transportation to the job site. So instead of the traditional way cast in situ and installation on-site method, the entire breakdown unit be just need to lift into place and fix up the connection.
1. Time-Saving - 20% of the construction period. It can shorten the project schedule significantly.
2. Manpower Saving - It's estimated to save more than 40% of manpower on the project level. It's extremely important to Singapore as most of our workers are foreigners.
3. Much Safer - With the reduction of manpower, the total exposure manhour will be reduced and lead to a lower incident rate and less downtime probability.
4. Better Quality Control - Since the PPVC was fully fabricated in a factory where the environment was fully controlled, which will be leading to an increase in reliability and high-quality finishing.
The adoption also brings some changes to traditional construction management such as the shift to higher lifting capacity tower crane, comprehensive heavy cargo logistic, just-in-time delivery planning and etc.
Housing Developing Board is taking the lead in adopting DfMA in their building projects where 75% of all its units launched in 2020 will adopt DfMA methods such as Prefabricated Pre-finished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) or Advanced Precast Concrete System (APCs).
